United Sisters: A Simple Thank You
A Simple
Thank You
Amy Bernhardt

I can
remember walking down the hall
with that
word whispered
just inside
my ear
"Dyke"
I rushed
past
my eyes
averted to the floor below
my cheeks
flushed and burning
my feelings
torn and trampled
I ran
to you-
to my
sisters
with tears
of fury obscuring my judgement
and I
told you, between sobs,
what had
transpired
First
you took me
as you
so often do
into your
arms and soothed me
stemming
the flow of my tears.
You now
had tears in your eyes.
You agreed
on the atrocity
of this
crime
of its
heinous and nefarious nature.
Then you
stepped back
and told
me firmly
but gently
that action
must be taken
You patted
my hand
and shoved
me off
Again
I walked down the hall
hearing
that word whispered
just inside
my ear
"Dyke"
I walked
on
my eyes
fixed on the person in front of me
my jaw
set in agitation
my anger
roused.
I came
to you
my sisters
my voice
shaking as well as my hands
and I
told you
what had
transpired.
After
another round
of hugs
and tears
I was
on my way again
your advice
still fresh in my mind.
I strode
down the hall
hearing
that word whispered
just inside
my ear
"Dyke"
I turned
around
my eyes
finally falling on my adversary
my head
held high
my fists
tightly clenched
I calmly
said my three words
as you
had instructed
as I had
rehearsed
"Leave
me alone."
I flew
to you
to my
sisters
bursting
with the news of my success
throwing
my arms around your necks
in a simple
Thank
You
