"A Sporting Chance: Title IX and Women's History"
Keynote Address by Susan Ware, Independent Historian
University of Southern Maine
University Events Room on the 7th floor of the Glickman Library
7:00 – 8:30PM

Over the past several decades, the words 'Title IX' have become
practically synonymous with women's sports. The events leading up to
Title IX's passage in 1972, and the struggle ever since to figure out
how to implement the law fairly, confirm the difficulties -- and the
rewards – of putting abstract principles like equal opportunity and
gender equity into concrete, everyday practice. In many ways, Title
IX has been the Equal Rights Amendment that never passed."

“Red Nails, Black Skates, Gay Games: Gender at the Ice Rink and the Politics of Pleasure”
University of Southern Maine
University Events Room on the 7th floor of the Glickman Library: 7:00 – 8:30PM

Erica Rand
Professor of Art and Visual Culture; Chair of Women and Gender Studies, Bates College

This talk concerns the politics of pleasure, using as a basis for
study my own participation in recreational figure skating, including
a recent trip to the Gay Games in July 2006. I am interested in two
related questions. 1) What complications, and sometimes lack of
complications, attend involvement in this extremely gendered sport?
2) Given the appropriate attention we devote to understanding and
fighting oppression, how can we also value and validate pleasure and
its pursuits in life and research?
