Poetry Reading: Chinyere Okafor
University of Southern Maine
University Events Room on the 7th floor of the Glickman Library: 7:00 – 8:30PM
Chinyere Grace Okafor is a poet, playwright, and fiction writer
teaching at the Center for Women’s Studies, Wichita State University.
Some of her writings include: He Wants To Marry Me Again and Other
Stories; From Earth’s Bed Chamber (poems); Campus Palavar and Other
Plays; The Lion and The Iroko (play); and The New Toyi Toyi (play);
her new poetry collection It Grows In Winter and Other Poems that is
being published by Africa World Press, NJ.
Dr. Okafor is the winner of Rockefeller, Nigerian, and South African
creative writing awards. She brings her extensive experience in
Nigeria and Southern Africa to help enrich her American experience as
the persona engages loved ones such as family and friends, as well as
adversaries such as war, death, apartheid, ethnic cleansing, and
terror. However, frustrations may appear like curses as in “Khaki
Throne’ and “When I Get Your Heart'. Her writings are celebrative of
the essences that empower political struggle and resilience.
“Laughter” and the poetic journey are partners as much as the muse
and the persona are one in the struggle.”
